‘Legends of 70s’ with Annesley Malawana
View(s):Legends of 70s’ with Annesley Malawana, a musical evening with a galaxy of stars will come alive at the BMICH on 8th December, 2019. Apart from Annesley himself backed by his band ‘Super Chimes’, guest artistes Anil Bharathi, Dharmaratne Brothers, Indrani Perera, Priya Peiris and Errol Fernando along with Sunil Perera of Gypsies and Benjy and Donald of Mirage fame will also be there to add colour to the event.
‘Legends of 70s’ is a charity project organised by St. Mary’s Church, Ratmalana in aid of their building fund project.
At a time when raising funds for anything is not an easy task, leave alone for repairs to a church, Rev. Fr. Prageeth Perera, the Parish Priest of St. Mary’s, Ratmalana said that his Parish Councillors suggested a ‘Musical Evening’ with Annesley Malawana. Obviously, he had been advised that the ‘Legends of 70s’ was a popular event that could help raise the funds needed.
‘St. Mary’s Church is 113 years old now and as it is situated in close proximity to the sea,the salty sea spray and obviously its age have taken their toll on the building. This being a church that has served the spiritual needs of the faithful for over a century, needs to be preserved for posterity’ added Father Prageeth.
Raising the necessary funds for the repairs urgently needed, which runs into millions of rupees, was a problem for this parish which consists of a good mix of middle-income families and fisher folk. Despite difficulties they face, they have come forward with financial assistance but sadly what has been collected is inadequate to fund the high estimated costs running into millions.
‘That was when the idea of a musical evening with Annesley Malawana’s ‘Legends of 70s’ had been mooted and the Parish Council had agreed to have the event at the BMICH on 8th December. Discussions with Annesley Malawana proved helpful and his advice particularly in organising the event was invaluable’ he added.
Fr. Prageeth Perera said ‘though it will be a challenge for the Parish Councillors, who are amateurs where organising such a major event is concerned, they have shown remarkable ability to adapt and have thus far taken the necessary work in their stride’.
Everything is now ready for a grand evening at the BMICH where pop music from the 70s will be dished out by the galaxy of stars whom Annesley has lined up.
