AIS swimmer sets new meet record and becomes Age Group champion

Asian International School (AIS) had the distinction of hosting the 25th Inter-International Schools Swimming Championship on November 9 and 10 at the Sugathadasa Swimming Pool Complex, with 22 schools and over a 1000 participants in five age groups, competing in more than 100 events.

The meet was a resounding success with host school AIS swimmer, young Nikhileshwaran Kumaraguru setting a new record in the 50-metre Backstroke in the Under-14 age group. Nikhil was also the proud recipient of three gold medals for the 50-metre Butterfly, 100-metre Butterfly and his record breaking 50-metre Backstroke events. He was also adjudged the Under-14 Boys Age Group champion.

Overall, AIS went on to bag six gold, four silver and 11 bronze medals at the meet. Anuk Ranasinghe won a gold medal in the Under-20 100-metre Freestyle boys category, while in the girls category, Thinara Lokuge won Gold in the Under-14 100-metre Backstroke event. Shanaya Perera won a gold medal in the Under-14 50-metre Breaststroke event.

This year too the championship generated much excitement with compliments and accolades being showered on hosts, AIS for conducting a tournament on this scale for 25 years.

“This is an event which is looked forward to by both students and parents of the international schools, and we as hosts are proud of the fact that we have been able to successfully stage it for 25 consecutive years,” Harshana Perera, the Principal of AIS stated.

The heads of all the international schools honoured the awards ceremony, serving as chief guests in distributing awards on both days of the meet.
