Attaab, Hansaja and Sanujan win silver medals in Sweden
Three top class Sri Lanka Youth boxers won silver medals at the ‘King of the Ring’ International Boxing Tournament 2019 held in Sweden last week.
Trinity’s Attaab Manzil, Vidyartha’s Hansaja and Jaffna boy (Hartley College) Sanujan, stamped their class in the three-day event which featured some top class youth boxers from hosts Sweden, England, Norway, Finland, Scotland, Portugal, Ireland, Gambia, Uganda, Senegal, Canada, India, Jordan, and Lebanon. More than 500 boxers from 18 countries showed their talent in the ring.
Attaab Manzil, one of the most scientific boxers at the Stubbs Shield this year, was outstanding in the event. He was the cynosure of all eyes after defeating a boxer from Canada and went on to beat a contestant from England in the second round before going down in a close battle for gold against a Jordanian player. Attaab comes from a sporting family, with his father Manzil Muthalib having represented the national outfit in table tennis. Attaab also led the College Under-16 rugby outfit and also excelled in table tennis his pet sport which runs in his family.
Sanujan from Jaffna, coming from less facilities, too stamped his class in his three games winning two for them along with Vidyartha College boy, Hansaja a tough lad who showed his class in the ring with another silver for Sri Lanka.
Other boxers on tour were Kavisha Manathunga (St. Sylvester’s College, Kandy – 52kg), Dheerananda College, Pilimatalawa pugilist S.M.K.S. Bandara (52kg) and Stubbs Shield Best Boxer Chethiya Ekanayake, Nisal Rangana Bandara (49kg) of Peradeniya MMV and Vimuk Hettiarachchi (56kg) of Royal College, Colombo. Abdullah Ibunu was the head coach of the outfit assisted by Lahiru Senarathne.
