Education Minister applauds Maths & Science Olympiad medal winners
View(s):Education Minister Dullas Alahapperuma has congratulated the victorious Sri Lankan team that took part in the 16th international Mathematics and Science Olympiad at Hanoi in Vietnam.
The 15-member team, comprised of 12 students and three officials, met the minister on Thursday after their return to the island. The team won one gold, one silver and three bronze medals in the science category and five bronze medals in the mathematics category at this year’s olympiad.
The gold medal in science was won by Athsara Fernando of Ananda College, Colombo while Miyuran Jathurshan of Vavuniya Tamil Madhya Maha Vidyalayam won the silver medal in science. The three bronze medals in science were won by Saviru Nanditha Subasinghe of Anuradhapura Madhya Vidyalaya, Lakalna Amarajeewa of Girls’ High School, Kandy and Shapthaki Senthuran of Ranbekulama Balika Maha Vidyalaya in Vavuniya. Safeek Jina Nafreen of Batticaloa Millath Mahalir Maha Vidyalaya was awarded certificate of attendance.
The five bronze medals in mathematics were won by Rehan Adittya Weerakoon of Badulla Madhya Maha Vidyalaya, Menusha Sivakumar of Vembadi Girls’ High School, Jaffna, Thenuki Sinelika Bosirini of Kegalle St. Joseph’s Balika Vidyalaya, Thejitha Ekanayake of Richmond College, Galle and Gokula Nayanajith Bandara of Maliyadeva College, Kurunegala.
Twenty-six countries took part in this year’s olympiad. Sri Lanka has won 60 medals including four golds in the olympiads it has taken part so far.
