10 killed, 16 injured in road accidents last week
View(s):At least 10 people were killed and 16 injured in a string of accidents reported this week in different parts of the country, Police said.
In the latest incident, three motorcycle riders were injured when their motorcycles collided along the Batticaloa, Kalmunai road. The injured were admitted to the Batticaloa Hospital.
A collision between a truck and lorry on Galkiriyagama , Anuradhapura road resulted in one death on Friday.
At Pallai in Kilinochchi on Friday, a collision between a bus and a motorcycle took place and two youth were killed. On Thursday night four army personnel and a truck driver was injured in a road accident in Vavuniya.
A lorry which was transporting vegetables from Colombo met with an accident on its way back.The accident took place at the Devon junction in Hatton, Nuwara-Eliya road as the lorry toppled down a cliff. Police believe the driver had fallen asleep at the wheel. He and the assistant who were injured were admitted to the Kotagala Hospital. As they were in a critical condition they were transferred to the Nuwara-Eliya hospital.
One man died in a collision between a motor bike and a car at Point Pedro, in Jaffna. The deceased was identified as M. Thileeban(40), he was a stock exchange manager in Jaffna.
A 21 year old man died in a collision between his motorbike and a gas container at Kosgama, Awissawella. The deceased was identified as Kumar Kaganeshan, a distillery employee at Madulsima, in Badulla. Another injured in the same incident was transferred to the Colombo General Hospital as his condition was critical. The driver’s container was taken into custody, the Police said.
A collision between two motorcycles at Naula, Matale resulted in the death of one person, with two being injured, Police said.
An 80-year old woman was killed when she was hit by a bus at Nikaweratiya, in Kurunegala, Police said. Tragically it was her 80th birthday.
Another incident has been reported at Galnewa in Balaluwewa where a motorcyclist was killed when he apparently lost control and hit a tree. He was identified as D.M.Dayaratne Dissanayake (57), and he was the Principal of Galnewa Junior School.
At Thawarakkulama, Anuradhapura, two were killed in a collision between a car and a motor bike.
The motorcyclist was killed instantly while the pillion rider was found dead when he was admitted to hospital.The deceased was identified as Thulil Amarasinghe( 50) a resident of Yasasiripura , Anuradhapura. Police say the car driver had fled from the scene and they later tracked him down.
