Matale boy scouts celebrate International Mountain Day with jamboree
View(s):International Mountain Day was celebrated in Panvila, Matale on December 11 (Wednesday). This day is commemorated to spread awareness on the usefulness of hills and mountains.
The protection of the environment and jungle sanctuaries near mountains have been emphasised in programmes by UN agencies.
The boy scouts of Matale organised a jamboree to celebrate International Mountain Day, and their camps were set up in the Matale Vipulananda Vidyalaya premises.
At this event, awards were given to school children who excelled in cultural and environment friendly performances. Foreign delegates and locals participated in the event, and the main attraction was the ‘Sky giving programme.’
Officials including the G.A. of Matale S.M.G.K. Perera, the G.A. of Kandy, D.M.N.G.G.T. Karunaratne, the CEA Director C.P.K.P. Welikannage and Bio Diversity Office Secretary R.H.M.M.P. Abeykoon were participants. UN officials, superintendents of Police, Panvila Divisional Secretariat officials and superintendents of plantations in the area and school children also attended.
