Russian language workshops in Colombo

Dedicated in providing opportunities and spreading cultural and educational importance across the country, the Russian Centre in Colombo has made its fair share of contribution for the educational enhancement of the local community with Russian Government Scholarships awarded, annually.

As a part of their strive in educational enhancement, the People’s Friendship University of Russia (formerly known as RUDN, Lumumba University etc.), with the assistance of the Russkiy Mir Foundation and the support of the Rossotrudnichestvo representative office ( the Russian Centre in Colombo)  organized a series of workshops for the local students interested in pursuing their higher education, specializing in Russian Language.

The students were given an opportunity to actively engage in Russian Language workshops that included interactive sessions with the delegation of RUDN. The delegation comprised associate professors of the Russian Language Department and Its Teaching Methods; Svetlana Deryabina, Svetlana Mikova, Irina Mitrofanova and was headed by the head of the department, academician of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences, Honoured Worker of Higher Education of the Russian Federation, member of the Council on the Russian Language under the President of the Russian Federation, Doctor of Philology Professor Viktor Mikhailovich Shaklein.

The workshops spanned along 10 days, From November 15th  to 25th on the premises of the University of Kelaniya and the RCSC in Colombo with the participation of a large crowd including youth, school students and teachers from Colombo, Negombo, Hikkaduwa and others, as well as students studying Russian at school in Balangoda and Anuradhapura.

At the end of the series of events, the Russian Centre in Colombo hosted a traditional get-together meeting of the RUDN alumni, who in total make more than five hundred people in Sri Lanka. The RUDN graduates of different years took part in the solemn meeting, watched with interest the presentation film about the modern days of the RUDN University, noting how their alma mater had changed over the years, got a thorough look at the photo exhibition and recalled classic Soviet cinema watching the “Twelve Chairs” film.

The event was held in warm and friendly atmosphere and culminated in a lively discussion with members of the RUDN University delegation at a Russian-style buffet.
