Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine is a unique institution in the UK, which focuses solely on science, engineering, medicine and business study streams. It was established with the Royal charter approval, in combining Royal College of Science, Royal School of Mines, and City and Guilds of London Institute which were all built to fulfil the vision of Prince Albert. The Imperial College School of Medicine was established by merging with St Mary’s Hospital Medical School in 1988 and the Imperial College Business School was opened in 2004 by Queen Elizabeth II.

The motto of the college is Scientia imperii decus et tutamen, which translates to English as “Scientific knowledge, the crowning glory and the safeguard of the empire” gives out the very basic meaning as well as the mission of the university.  The Imperial Public Research University is based in the centre of the capital, is regarded as one of the UK’s leading institutions. Formerly an integral college of the University of London, later Imperial College became independent of the University of London in 2007, the 100th anniversary of its founding.

The main campus is located in South Kensington, with an innovation campus in White City. Imperial’s based in South Kensington in London, is known as ‘Alberto polis’ is the place where, Prince Albert and Sir Henry Cole’s vision of an area where science and the arts coming together became a reality.

Imperial has an international community, which includes more than 59% of students from outside the UK and 140 countries represented on campus exposing the students to real world challenges with no easy answers, teaching that opens everything up to question and opportunities to work across multi-cultural, multi-national teams.

The cutting edge and globally influential nature of this research is what Imperial is best known for. It’s the focus on the practical application of their research – particularly in addressing global challenges – and the high level of interdisciplinary collaboration that makes their research so effective.

Imperial College Union has over 370 clubs and societies, among the highest number in the UK.

Imperial College London is part of the prestigious Russell Group and is ranked the 4th best university in the UK by the latest Times Good University Guide. It has regularly secured its rank as one of the ten best universities in the world (QS World Rankings) and ground breaking work and cutting edge research is consistently performed at the University.

Imperial College London holds a Silver Athena Swan award, which recognizes advancing women’s careers in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine in academia in order to motivate and uplift the enthusiasm of women in these areas.
