Maithripala Senanayake National School spikers champions
Maithripala Senanayake National School, Medawachchiya emerged champions in the Under 20 category of the Sunquick National Beach Volleyball tournament concluded last weekend at the Negombo Beach Park.
Located in Rajarata where the sea is hundreds and hundred miles away, the Medawachchiya lads defeated schools in the sea belt to prove their courage and determination. They defeated Hungama National School in the finals 2-0 to clinch the championship.
One hundred and eighty six teams participated in the championship which was conducted for three days.
This year’s national Beach Volleyball championship was marked with exceptional performances in the Open Men’s final where Army gunned down Air Force represented by two gold medallists at the recently concluded South Asian Games.
The soldiers were represented by two silver medalists who competed in the Sri Lanka ‘B’ team. Army who were outstanding in the championship clinched two championship awards in the Open Under 25 Men’s Open competitions.
The event also marked the felicitation ceremony for the Sri Lanka ‘A’ and ‘B’ competitors who won gold and silver medals at the South Asian Games in Nepal.
President of the Sri Lanka Volleyball Federation, Ranjith Siyambalapitiya graced the prize distribution ceremony as chief guest along with Priyantha Jayakody, senior vice president of the federation, and Mangala Perera, director of Sunquick.
