Savani Kavishka De Silva is an all-round BSc (Hons) Business Information Systems graduate from IIT who has achieved much success following graduation. Savani is currently employed as a Project Manager at Proavos Labs Pvt Ltd, which is a company that provides state of art software solutions and services for airlines, airports, travel agents and leisure companies. Following are excerpts of the interview with Savani, who shared her thoughts on her journey at IIT.
Can you give a brief introduction to yourself?
My name is Savani Kavishka De Silva and I recently graduated with a first-class honours in BSc (Hon) Business Information Systems degree programme from the University of Westminster, UK. There are five members in my family including two sisters.
Let us know a bit of your school education?
I’m a past pupil of St. Pauls’ Milagiriya Girls School. I completed G.C.E A/L in Combined Mathematics stream with flying colors. In my school days I actively took part in sports, interschool band events, dancing competitions, clubs, and societies. As a member of Senior Eastern Band, I have represented my school in many occasions, including Mother Sri Lanka inauguration programme 2009. I was also a member of the Media Unit, Science Society and school ICT club.
What made you decide you follow your higher education at IIT?
Given its industry reputation I chose IIT for my higher education.
The recognition that IIT has gained by producing all-round graduates with higher career opportunities was a key factor that influenced me. All the success stories and positive feedback from the alumni of IIT attracted me to join IIT.
How was your student life and experiences like at IIT?
IIT offered an array of opportunities and experiences that I will cherish in life. Be it academics or extracurricular activities, I was able to excel at both. Stage Craft, Rotaract club, toastmasters club, and the exposure at national and international level competitions shaped me to be who I am today.
What are your notable achievements at IIT?
Reflecting on my journey at IIT, I have many achievements to share.
My final year project “Speakopedia” was shortlisted at ICT Innovative Service Award 2019 held in Taiwan as the only project representing Sri Lanka. And won the first place for the Best Project, bringing pride to Sri Lanka. The project also bagged Gold Award at Cutting Edge 2019.
I also won many awards in national and international competitions during my studies such as the GSEA 2018, NBQSA 2017, InnoServe 2017, HackLN 2017, HLM3 Asia Pacific Youth Innovation Challenge organized by UNICEF 2016 and many more, bringing glory to IIT as well as Sri Lanka. Also, I am in debt to my parents and sisters for the support and believing in me throughout the journey. They certainly helped me to become the person who I am today.
Has IIT shaped you for corporate success? If so, how?
Having established a solid base in professional and personal life, I was offered with number of job opportunities from leading organizations upon completion of my final year at IIT.
The first-hand experience gained with the internship at LSEG shaped me to get the right balance between personal and professional aspects of a career. I was exposed to many opportunities, where I was able to gain insights into novel concepts, technologies and work cultures that led the path for me to gain the edge over the others. I believe the overall exposure from IIT, groomed me towards helping me understand the career path I should take to reach my aspirations.
Can you describe the support you received from the staff and the faculty of IIT?
I would like to highlight the assistance given by the academic and the non-academic staff at IIT was admirable. The guidance from academics to shape students’ was exceptional. Most importantly the staff was always approachable and friendly.
What are your fondest
moments at IIT?
There are plenty of great moments I had at IIT. A few amongst them are, my first year at IIT, leading three projects and bagging all the three awards from Level 4 keeping a record in history of IIT at Cutting Edge 2016. Also the winning moments at Stage Craft 2018 and 19 for Best group dance and Best Solo dancer awards was also special.
What are your reasons to
recommend IIT to students?
IIT is not a typical institute, focused only on the academic qualification of its students. IIT is a place which produces well-rounded graduates with outstanding skills while laying the path for them to shine as future leaders in the industry. IIT focuses on students’ overall personalities bringing out their true potentials, which is unique to IIT.
IIT is undoubtedly the best place for any student who is looking to become an all-rounder and a true leader with strong interpersonal skills.
IIT is an award winning campus, which has bagged many accolades for innovation in local and international competitions such as Microsoft Imagine Cup, National Best Quality Software Awards (NBQSA), APICTA, British Council-HSBC Youth Enterprise Award and e-Swabhimani.
