Local firm launches high tech products using AI, machine learning tech
View(s):AI and Vision Solutions (Pvt) Ltd, Sri Lanka’s newest upcoming contender in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML) and Internet of Things (IoT) – recently launched pioneering high tech products with the use of AI and Machine Learning technologies.
With the development of the innovative Registration Number Recognition System (RNRS), users will be able to recognise vehicle registration numbers from number plates when captured on camera, and use the data gathered for various applications. This system has been conceptualized and developed by AI and Vision Solutions (Pvt) Ltd and is available for potential customers in the country.
Consisting of capable Sri Lankan engineers, AI and Vision Solutions is a homegrown start-up which carried out years of extensive research in order to produce programmes and solutions by combining AI and Machine Learning. With the potential to change the current landscape of traditional monitoring systems, the RNRS System is the first of its kind in Sri Lanka, which has also been uniquely customised to capture and recognise Sinhala characters such as යුහ, නාහ and ගුවන් from any given number plate, along with its respective province code identification – entailing a proven accuracy of over 95 per cent, the company said in a media release.
A few of the ground-breaking applications run by the RNRS system include automatic vehicle park ticket printing and barrier gate systems, low cost automatic ticket printing and surveillance system for highways, city surveillance, critical infrastructure surveillance and traffic law violation detection.
With the use of this innovation, any location which monitors its parking could completely automate the process of monitoring which vehicles enter and exit, the time spent at the location, calculation of parking fee and issuing tickets. This application increases the accuracy of surveillance along with the creation of its own database of information for future reference – which could also aid in decision making processes.
Theekshana Wickramatilake – CEO and Managing Director, AI and Vision Solutions, said: “Most researchers have tried to develop similar systems by using traditional computer vision and machine learning techniques. These methods only work for registration number plates with high resolution and quality; thus failing to deliver good results for distorted and impaired registration number plates. Our innovation uses state-of-the-art AI and Machine Learning techniques along with sophisticated algorithms to train the system of all kinds of registration number plates.”
He further stated, “Most license plate recognition systems available in the international market are only able to detect different fonts with English letters and numbers on various registration number plates. Our system achieves more accuracy since not only does it recognise English letters and numbers, it also detects Sinhala characters together with the unique format including province code on Sri Lankan Registration number plates. This alone sets us apart from the rest of the available products in the market.”
As a local start-up, AI and Vision Solutions said it aims to revolutionise the existing surveillance and vehicle monitoring processes with the introduction of the RNRS system. Serving both government and private sectors, organisations will be able to reduce costs and store data within a local database, further eliminating the risk of data being manipulated offshore.
