Yerevan State Medical University (YSMU) is the Soviet Union’s first medical university, the largest and most prestigious medical university in Armenia and is located in the capital Yerevan with 31,000 graduates till date and 11 teaching hospitals.
There are about 8,000 students in 6 faculties of the State Medical University after Heratsi. It is considered to be the best university to study MD in Armenia (which is equivalent to MBBS in India). Teaching and Research activities are organized in more than 100 chairs, leading clinical bases and research centers in Yerevan.
University has about 1,100 lectures out of which, 171 are well qualified Doctors of Science, 504 are candidates of Sciences, 7 Academicians of the RANAS; who perform scientific and pedagogical works at the university.
YSMU is established in 1920 making the oldest university in Armenia. YSMU – world’s top ranked university is recognized by the Sri Lanka Medical council (SLMC), World Health Organization (WHO) Australian Medical Council (AMC), General Medical council (GMC) and Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG). Since 2000, the university started providing education in English medium for international students as the number of international students started increasing gradually.
At present, YSMU hosts approximately 2500 International students (41% of all the foreign students in Armenia) from various countries such as Australia, Belarus, Canada, China, France, Georgia, Germany, the Great Britain, Greece, India, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Lebanon, Moldova, Poland, Russia, Sri Lanka, Syria, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, The USA, Uzbekistan and Venezuela.

The university offers degree programs in General Medicine with a duration of 12 semesters ( 6 years),Dentistry (Stomatology) and Pharmacy with a duration of 10 semesters (5 years). The university utilizes a wide array of modern educational technical aids. Students learn pre-clinical and clinical disciplines during the study period with a great attention being paid to practical skills acquired during the classes and practical training periods in the university simulation Center, laboratories and hospitals. Compared to all the other destinations to study medicine, YSMU is much affordable with high quality education. The university directs the student to exams such as AMC and PLAB.
Also, the university has established close connections with medical universities and international health organizations in the field of higher education and health. These well-known universities are from USA, Germany, Greece, Italy, France, Belgium, Egypt, Sweden etc. Since 2000, YSMU has joined international organizations. Among them are SGROUP European Network of Universities, The International Association of Universities, World Federation of Medical Education as member of Medical Education Association in Europe, and Association for Dental Education in Europe. The university provides comfortable accommodation and dining facilities to its students. The University hostel accommodates international students in two well-maintained dormitories. Laundry service is also available for the students.
The university has a separate sports complex, a library with over 600,000 volumes, gym and swimming pool facility as well. There is an extra-curricular department, which operates all the sports activities on campus that includes dancing, theatre, drama, soccer, volleyball, basketball, power lifting, chess, and much more. For transportation, students can take advantage of the regular bus service or metro.
Since breaking free from the Soviet Union, the country has proven itself to be a world beater at the sport- Chess. Armenia is also famous for its three UNESCO World Heritage Sites namely the monasteries of Haghpat and Sanahin; the cathedral and churches of Echmistsin and the archeological site of Zvartnots; and the monastery of Geghard and the Upper Azat Valley.
