Multimillion rupee liquor licence fraud revealed

A high level internal investigation is to be launched on a liquor licence fraud running up to millions of rupees, informed source said.

Liquor licences which have been issued allegedly defrauding Rs.500 million has come to light when the newly appointed Commissioner General of Excise A. Bodaragama was inspecting relevant files, a senior official of the department said.

It has been revealed that 10 liquor licences have been sold by a former top official of the Finance Ministry during the tenure of former Finance Minister Mangala Samaraweera.

The FL4 licence fraud is to be investigated as soon as possible on the directions of the new Commissioner General of Excise A. Bodaragama.

The Business Times reliably learnt that this official has already left the island as he is accused of several other malpractices when he was holding the post of working director of the National Lotteries Board.
