Ambulance takes to the sky
On Thai Pongal day the Jaffna sky was adorned with many colourful kites as the annual kite festival held at Valvettiturai, in Jaffna took place.
The festival is held to coincide with Thai Pongal celebrations and this was its tenth consecutive year.
Forty eight kites of various designs were showcased, and the winner was ‘a group of traditional musicians’.
One of the kites depicted ‘Suwa Seriya’, the country’s free ambulance service that can be reached by dialing 1990.
“I am speechless! Never did I ever expect to see anything like this,” said Former Minister Dr. Harsha de Silva in tweet about the creative kite.
“The story is some kids created this 1990 #SuwaSeriya kite for the Jaffna kite festival the other day; obviously the service touched their hearts. Thank you! We continue to save lives 24×7 across,” Dr de Silva said.
This event was the brainchild of the Valvai Vikneswara community centre. The Centre’s President, S.M.Sivamayam said the north eastern monsoon winds during this month were ideal for flying kites, and the event is a spectacular one. Every year thousands of people from the Jaffna peninsula, and foreign visitors, attend.
Northern Province Youths and Sports Affairs Secretary L. llangovan, Northern province Motor Traffic Director Sujiva Sivadas, Former Northern provincial councillor M.K.Sivajilingam and Valvettithurai Urban Council Chairman K. Karunadarasa were among those who attended the festival.
