Lankan twins all set for world record tomorrow

The Sri Lanka Association of twins is calling on twins here to be a part of a new world record for the largest gathering of twins.
Association president Upuli Gamage said they are inviting the twin community to congregate at the Suagathadasa stadium tomorrow by 9.30 a.m.
Ms. Gamage said those who wish to take part need to bring birth certificates endorsed by a divisional secretary or a justice of the peace along with their National Identity Card.
Currently, Taiwan holds the record. November 12, 1999 saw 3,900 pairs of twins converging on the square in front of Taipei City Hall, shattering the previous world record of 2,900 pairs.
Sri Lanka Twins Association founder and secretary Chamali Gamage said that they hope to set a new record by gathering 5,000 pairs of twins.
She said she and her twin sister Upuli formed the association in August 23, 1993 and they now have a membership of 28,000 in spite of all the hurdles they faced.
Ms Gamage said many members face financial hardships, yet the government had done little to look into their matters.
“We have no sponsorship or government support. We don’t even have enough finances to buy stamps for 8000 letters which need to be sent to some of the association members,” she said.
