Urumayaka Pelahara: Historical dance pageant to hit the stage
View(s):Pirouetting through the changing kingdoms and fortunes of Sri Lanka, a novel ballet is to usher in February. To be held on the 2nd of the coming month, Urumayaka Pelahara promises to be a visual poetry production that charts the island’s historical tale- from the shores of Thambapanni where it all began to the last king of Kandy.
Directed by Rangika Jeewantha of Rivega Dance Studio, it is the country’s first Sinhala ballet to feature a cast of popular artistes. Originally created in 2018 it went on the boards at the Royce Hall in Los Angeles as well as in Las Vegas to mark Sri Lanka’s Independence Day.
Featuring Rathna Lalani Jayakody, Damitha Abeyratne, Dhananjaya Siriwardena, Medha Jayaratne, Gamya Wijedasa and Madhawa Wijesinha, the ballet is written by P.W.G. Dayan and the music composer is Nalaka Weligodapola.
Sachintha de Silva with Beat Drummers will blend in the pulse of shifting epochs over two millennia.
The dazzling new dance pageant of Lanka will open at the Nelum Pokuna Mahinda Rajapaksa Theatre at 7 p.m. on February 2.
