Kegalu BV’s Chameesha is the Most Outstanding Paddler at ITTF project tourney
View(s):‘My Gender. My Strength’, a national association assistance programme for Women’s Development in Table Tennis by the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) was held during the last week of December in Colombo and Jaffna with only girls and women taking part. The three-day programme included two coaching camps and an all-girls tournament to wind up with.
In the Unranked Segment Chameesha Thushadhi of Kegalu Balika Vidyalaya was adjudged the Most Outstanding Player of the Tournament at the landmark tournament held alongside the three-day programme. Chameesha won the Women’s Singles, Girls’ Under-18 Singles and the Under-15 Singles beating much fancied opponents to snatch the P.N. Pestonjee Memorial Challenge Trophy.
In addition Mayumi Weeraparakrama of Lyceum International School, Kurunegala bagged wins under two categories as she won the Girls’ Under-12 and Under-10 Singles titles.
Upadya Chethani of Swarnapali Girl’s College, Anuradhapura earned top honours in the Novices category, winning two age group titles. Upadya won the Girls Under-18 and Under-15 Singles.
The Sri Lanka project of ‘My Gender. My Strength’ was held during December 26 to 28, 2019 and was conducted by the Table Tennis Association of Sri Lanka (TTASL) in collaboration with the ITTF. Under the project coaching camps were held on the first day in Colombo and on the second day in Jaffna. In addition, the All-Island Unranked and Novices Table Tennis Championship was held concurrently with the programme on the final day in Jaffna with only female players taking part.
This project was initiated by the ITTF and carried out by the TTASL and the Women’s Working Group of Sri Lanka, headed by Namal Gunasekara. Mrs. P.G.R. Jayathunga, the Deputy Principal of Hanguranketha Central College, graced the awards ceremony on the final day as the chief guest.
