Kelani Cables Plc has manufactured Sri Lanka’s first motion sensor, a device that detects moving objects – particularly people.

Mr. Mahinda Saranapala.

Mahinda Saranapala, Director/CEO Kelani Cables PLC told the Business Times, that this motion sensor was developed inhouse by the company about one year ago. Now the company is retailing it to the market.

“It’s retailing at Rs. 1,400 and is very successful in the market,” Mr. Saranapala added.

A motion sensor is the linchpin of the security system, as it’s the focal device that senses when someone is in the home when they shouldn’t be, he said noting that this is the first step for a smart home concept.

This sensor is aimed to give improved home security and is capable of sensing the motion or the movement of a person/object in real time. “As an example if we install this smart product at your home veranda and successfully wire the sensor output to the light bulb or alarm buzzer when the sensor power is ON if there is some movement under the sensor active range, the sensor will quickly identify that and it’s capable of switching on the light bulb or alarm buzzer,” Mr. Saranapala explained.

He added that it is also energy saving. “Why do we keep our power loads turned on while no one makes use of it? The Kelani Motion Sensor is a very good method of energy saving. Also a built-in ambient light sensor that can be adjusted to automatically turn the lights off if there is sufficient daylight.”

He also mentioned cost saving, saying that successful installation of the Kelani motion sensor can save many types of unnecessary costs. “It has easy wiring and is at an affordable price with a one year warranty,” Mr. Saranapala said.

He said that the sensor can be synchronized with the required light level. “This sensor can alert you in the event that your teenage child breaks curfew, triggers a doorbell when someone approaches the front door, alert you when kids enter restricted areas in the home, save energy by using motion sensor lighting in unoccupied spaces and also notify you if pets enter areas where they’re not supposed to be,” he explained further.
