As a leading non – state higher education institute in Sri Lanka, SLIIT’s BSc (Hons) in Biotechnology degree positions students at the forefront of life sciences toward a wider range of employment opportunities.

Biotechnology, the fastest growing science-based industry in the world, is regarded as an engine of growth for the global economy. For students who thirst for this new knowledge and ways to increase their employability in diverse fields related to the biotechnology industry, the BSc (Hons) in Biotechnology degree offered through the Faculty of Humanities and Sciences at SLIIT provides comprehensive knowledge and the exposure required.

The four-year programme helps to bridge the gap between industry and academia. The course content is aimed at providing students with a good foundation of knowledge and experience of the different fields of biotechnology for their future careers.

“Biotechnology is unquestionably one of the fastest growing fields in science and research today. SLIIT provides students the opportunity to study this discipline using state-of-the-art technology and being supervised by a very qualified scientific staff. Job opportunities are available in Veterinary Industry, Pharmaceutical Industry, Biomedical Engineering, Agricultural Industry, the area of product manufacturing & production, Nutritional Biotechnology, Bioinformatics, Forensic Investigations, Marine Biotechnology and even the Bioterrorism. This degree is ideal for the students who have followed the Biology Stream at the GCE Advanced Level examination.

The programme is recognized and approved by the University Grants Commission under the Universities Act and the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE).

Minimum entry requirement for the BSc (Hons) Biotechnology are three ‘S’ passes covering biology and chemistry in Local A/L or three ‘D’ passes covering biology and chemistry in Cambridge/Edexcel A/L obtained at one and the same sitting. Students are also required to pass an Aptitude Test conducted by the Institute.
