Horizon Campus offers intake for industry renowned BIT Degree
View(s):The current demand-supply gap for the ICT workforce in the country is widening rather than closing and with the government being overloaded in catering to this demand through its state-owned higher education system alone, means that the private higher education sector needs to step in to educate, train and produce the talent required by the industry at large.

ICT experts are needed today to improve protection against industrial espionage and cyber warfare, or to develop AI, e-health and digital design.
In order to meet this need Horizon Campus, a leading private education institute approved by the University Grants Commission, launched its Bachelor of Information Technology (BIT) External Degree program in partnership with the University of Moratuwa in the year 2016.

Speaking about the value that can be derived from the degree, Dr. Amal Rajapakse, Dean, Faculty of Information Technology, stated that the degree had an extensive and comprehensive curriculum covering every major area of IT and gives a combination of knowledge about electronics, software, computer science and communications technology.
Students will gain in- depth knowledge in software engineering, web technologies, design, mathematics, information systems, networking, data structures and algorithms, security and Bio Informatics that will prepare them and give the ability to apply technical skills to solve problems and support innovation. They will gain the practical experience required to design efficient, reliable software that meets industry standards and also learn about the hardware on which software runs.
The teaching methodology includes a combination of lectures, laboratory work and practice. Students will benefit from the extensive group work conducted as well as working in research environments.
Dr. Rajapakse further noted that “today’s society is highly dependent on Information and Communication Technology (ICT). This programme therefore was designed to meet society’s demands for ICT solutions and prepare a generation of highly skilled specialists in the field. The degree creates opportunities for students to utilize the knowledge gained in the programme for either an international career, or further master’s level studies that will include the opportunity to study MSc in Information Technology at Moratuwa University.
Additionally, the degree will also train students to be exciting technology innovators that help solve problems in business, commerce, defence, medical research, climate change and the environment.
Dr. Rajapakse concluded by saying “Overall, this degree designed in close collaboration with industry, addresses the growing demand for knowledgeable graduates possessing the right in-demand skills and the ability to develop systems and solutions that the future digital media world requires’.
