Weeknd secures No: 1 song on the UK chart
Canadian singer the Weeknd has secured his first No: 1 song on the UK singles chart with ‘Blinding Lights’. The song moved from a notch to claim the pole position 14 weeks since it entered the chart No; 14. ‘Blinding Lights’ lost steam and dropped down the chart during the Christmas season and then bounced back. The song cleared 63,000 chart sales to the No: 1 position. Weeknd has co-written ‘Blinding Lights’ under his actual name of Abel Tesfaye. The track is the Weeknd’s ninth UK top 10 hit. His previous best hit song was ‘Starboy’ which peaked at No: 2 in 2016. Today (16th February) is the Weeknd’s 30th birthday.
Eminem brings down the roof at the Oscars
When Eminem won the Oscar for Best Original Song in 2003 for ‘Lose Yourself’ he was not there to perform nor was he there to receive the award. He made up for it by giving a surprise performance at this year’s Oscars virtually bring the roof down. The song was from his semi autobiographical film 8 Mile. Later he posted an apology on social media to the organisers saying “sorry it took me 18 years to get here”
Taylor Swift to continue with Universal Music
Taylor Swift has extended her agreement with the Universal Music Publishing Group. On 6th February the 30 year old Swift announced her new deal with Universal will cover the world. Earlier Swift was with Sony since the age of 14. But in recent years the relationship turned sour more recently ending up in a bitter feud. The new agreement will cover all new material as well as older ones under the Sony/ATV Music Publishing which will expire soon.
Jonas Brothers to release new album
The Jonas Brothers will be releasing a new album this year. It is expected to be a follow up to ‘Happiness Begins’ which came out in June 2019. That album spawned the hit song ‘Sucker’. The new album is expected soon.
Harry Styles secured solo top 10 UK Hit
Harry Styles has scored his third solo top 10 UK hit as ‘Adore You’ which moved up from 14 to No: 10. The track is the third single from his current album ‘Fine Line’. The One Direction member on his solo career performed the song on the Graham Norton Show last December. The pop rock track began it chart journey nine weeks ago at No:11. But ‘Adore You’ lost ground until the turn around came a fortnight ago.
Madonna disappointed with London Palladium cutting her concert short
The “queen of pop” took a pot shot at the London Palladium for cutting short her concert on Feb 05. Under regulations all public performances must end at 11.00 pm. But as her Madame X show had run 5 minutes after 11 pm the curtain was brought down she took to social media to criticise the move by the venue. Madonna had earlier cancelled some shows owing to her ill-health.
