KIU presents Bachelor of Science Honours in Biomedical Science
View(s):“A step towards understanding the biology behind human body and exploration of new diagnostic and therapeutic approaches for the advancement of Health”
Biomedical Science includes several disciplines related to health science and modern medicine. This field has become the driving force behind novel diagnostic techniques and treatment strategies to effectively resolve the diverse disease conditions faced by humans. One of the major challenges faced by mankind is the increasing rate of individuals affected by non-communicable diseases as well as new infections that devour certain populations. Further the challenge still stands to find a cure for cancer and certain disease conditions that are incurable. Biomedical Science gears an individual towards exploring new possibilities to solve medical problems based on the sound knowledge they gain from the undergraduate degree, and ultimately make a substantial contribution to the field of medicine.
Why select KIU for pursuing BSc. Hons in Biomedical Science degree?
BSc. Hons in Biomedical Science degree offered by KIU is composed of 31 modules including Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Haematology, Molecular biology, Pathology, Biostatistics, research methodology and Immunology as main areas of study. There are practical sessions designed in certain modules to ensure the gain of practical skills related to medicine as well as medical laboratory sciences. In the final year of academic studies the students are required to conduct a research project which will ensure their research capabilities where they will embed themselves in methodical laboratory procedures and improve their analytical skills whilst gaining self-confidence for working as a researcher. Publishing the research work will be highly encouraged after the research project where the student will gain national and international attention of the scientific community. A well-qualified and highly dedicated lecturer panel will ensure the delivery of maximum knowledge and skills to the undergraduate with the use of cutting edge technology and state of the art laboratories.
Student Support in academia
A thorough student mentoring programme is available for the students at KIU giving the freedom of communicating with lecturers at a time of an academic challenge, to find a rapid solution and for continuous support in studies.
A Career as a Biomedical Scientist
A biomedical scientist is a professional who is trained in biology, especially in the context of medicine. Their main target is to find new ways to find cure, treat or prevent disease by developing advanced Preventive measures, diagnostic tools or new therapeutic strategies.
A Biomedical Scientist in a clinical setting may engage in activities such as
- Analyzing microbial cultures for diagnostic or research purposes
- Identifying blood groups
- Analyzing different specimens for chemical constituents using manual and automated testing procedures.
- Interpreting results of medical reports aiding in the diagnosis and prognosis of a patient
- Monitoring the effects of treatment and medication
- Maintaining accurate records
- Writing medical reports
- Engage in research and development activities relevant to a particular discipline
The aim of the Biomedical Science Department of KIU is to produce Scientists that are capable of confidently working in the Health sector, and contribute something new and important to the world.
