CFPS Law School University of London students graduate with First Class Honours
View(s):The graduation ceremony of the CfPS Law School for 2020 was held on 15th February 2020 at the BMICH.
The ceremony was chaired by Dr. Mary Stiasny who is the Pro Vice- Chancellor (International) and the Chief Executive of the University of London worldwide. Dr. Stiasny conferred the degrees and Certificates in Higher Education in Common Law to nearly 100 graduates and diplomates of the University of London of the CfPS Law School.
The highlight of this ceremony was that one of the CfPS students (Nidumi Wijerathne) was conferred a first class honours LL.B degree from the University of London. This feet was matched by only 7 other students from thousands of students who sat for the University of London LL.B Exams in May 2019 from the entire world.
Justice Dr. Saleem Marsoof, former judge of the Supreme Court and Prof. Wasantha Senevirathne graced the occasion as the Chief Guest and Guest of Honour respectively. Mr. Saliya Pieris President’s Counsel and the Chairman of CfPS Law School, Mr. Upul Daranagama and Mr.Nanda Muruttettuwegama the joint Managing Directors, the members of the Senior Management and the Teaching Faculty of the CfPS were also accommodated on stage along with Dr Mary Stiansy.
Dr.Stiasny emphasised that the degrees awarded by the University of London were of a very high quality and receives global recognition.
In his welcome address the Chairman of the CfPS Law School Saliya Pieris President’s Counsel stressed on the need for commitment and diligence on the part of the new graduates in pursuing their chosen career.
Twelve Students who achieved distinctions in Legal Systems and Methods, Contract Law, Criminal Law, Public Law, Administrative Law, International Protection of Human Rights, European Union Law, Public International Law and Jurisprudence and Legal Theory at the University of London exams in 2019 were also awarded certificates at this ceremony.
Eight graduates who achieved excellence in academic achievement at the University of London LL.B. were presented with medals by the Chief Guest Justice Dr. Saleem Marsoof.
The CfPS presented a cash price of Rs 300,000 to Nidumi Wijerathne in recognition of her obtaining a First Class honours Bachelor of Laws examination from the University of London.
After her A/L’s Nidumi registered with CfPS Law School in order to pursue a career in law. At CfPS Law School she was awarded a 50% scholarship. Nidumi registered with the CfPS Law School for all three years of her University of London LL. B degree. Due to the guidance and direction she received from CfPS Law School, Nidumi was able to secure a first class at last year’s University of London LL. B exams.
Nidumi generously attributes her success to the eminent lecture panel which consists of legal practitioners and legal academics possessing both local and UK academic and professional qualifications. In Nidumi’s valedictory speech she stated that the scholarship that she obtained from the CfPS helped her immensely to realise her dream. She further stated that participating in extra -curricular activities at the CfPS helped her to have a more holistic approach towards her studies.
Another highlight of the ceremony was the standing ovation that was given to the all the new graduates and diplomates by the audience which warmed the hearts of all those present.
The CfPS Law School is a Recognised Teaching Institution of the University of London for its Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) and Certificate of Higher Education in the Common Law Programmes. The University of London Laws Programme is backed by a consortium of the top lead Colleges of the University of London namely the London School of Economics (LSE), University College of London (UCL), King’s College London, Birkbeck, SOAS and Queen Mary , which are all top ranked Universities in the World.
The University of London has always maintained the highest standards and all examination answer scripts are sent to London and are corrected by the examiners of the University itself.
The CfPS law School have two student intakes each year in March and August. Prior to studying the first year law subjects, the students who are enrolled in March are put through a rigorous course where they are given the skills that they should acquire in order to effectively study law such as how to read and understand a statute or a judgement how to write and academic answer etc.
At CfPS students are able to participate in debates and moots organised by the CfPS Law School Debating and Mooting Society. Another innovative feature is the Internship Programme which gives the opportunity to the students who have completed their 2nd and 3rd Year exams to intern in the Chambers of Presidents Counsel and Senior Attorneys-at-Law. Students are also taken on Court and parliamentary visits.
The student Council – the vibrant student body which is elected by the students themselves ensures that the students get a total student experience at the CfPS. The annual sports day, the talent show, the end of the year party, the fresher’s night and the quiz competition are some of the events that are organised each year by the student council.
The new intake commences in March 2020.
