Visitors warned of death trap on road to World Heritage Site

Visitors to the Dumbara Plains have been warned of a death trap on an access road to the World Heritage Site. In recent weeks, three fatal accidents have occurred at the entrance to the Riverston Road in Rattota. Most of the accidents have taken place on weekends, during which many people visit the area.

Officials say poor road conditions and reckless driving were the main cause of these accidents.

When the Sunday Times visited the area, we found road construction work that were started many years ago had still not been completed.

There were potholes. The road was dangerously slippery when it rained, residents said, adding that many drivers took little notice of the sign boards that warned of the bad road condition.

Wayside shop owners said they usually warned motorists to be careful when travelling on the steep Riverstone Road.  Most of the accidents involved three-wheelers and motorcycles.

“Many drivers are unaware of the road condition. The road is not wide enough for one vehicle to overtake another,’ said Nimal Kanahera, a visitor to the area. He said the authorities should take immediate measures to ensure the safety of motorists going to the World Heritage Site.
