All Saints College, Borella past pupils felicitate veteran teacher
View(s):The Past Pupils of All Saints College, Borella held a ceremony at Platinum One recently to felicitate a veteran teacher of the school. Miss Iris Peiris, later Mrs Samarasekera served All Saints for 37 years, her period of service starting in 1947. Ms Peiris as she is still fondly known by her students celebrated her 97th birthday on January 23.
“She was a strict disciplinarian, but always with a smile. We remember her as smartly dressed in georgette sarees of every colour,” a tribute compiled her past students read.
“Many are the memories we have of Ms. Pieris like perfecting the students for the drill display on Independence Day, the cookery lessons on the ground floor of our only two storeyed building in days gone by, where she used to turn out delicious cakes in an oven which we thought would never work. She took an interest in all the activities, be it a concert, an English Day or a Sports meet.
“She played the piano with great expertise, and we used to march into the hall for assembly to strains of the Colonel Bogey March or When the Saints Go Marching in,” they said recalling her training them to be Brownies and Girl Guides too.
