Saluting the women of Sri Lanka
View(s):Women are faced with the challenge of building through their own initiatives and they must ensure that they remain ahead of everyone else in recognising both the role as well as the aspirations of women, according to Indira Senanayake Kulatilake, Past Chairperson of the Women’s Chamber of Industry and Commerce.
In a statement to mark International Women’s Day which falls today, Ms. Kulatilake said that she took this opportunity of celebrating this special day to stand in salute of women of Sri Lanka, hand in hand standing strong “you have made our country what it is today”.
Paying tribute to Sri Lankan women, she said: “We must pay special tribute to migrant women who have dared to risk their lives in alien lands to improve the living standards of their families, and bring the much needed foreign exchange to our country”.
“Women’s participation in politics is a key measure for women’s empowerment, but in Sri Lanka women’s representation has dropped significantly. More of us should knock down rather than knock on doors, call out sexism and gender bias for what it is, and take up our rightful place in politics and in society. We are particularly inspired by young people in society, especially one young Pakistani woman, Malala Yousafzai who has been standing up for women’s rights to be educated. She is a role model for a whole generation,” she said.
