SLIC to adopt environmentally friendly waste management system
View(s):Sri Lanka Insurance (SLIC), the country’s leading local insurer, has joined with ICC Smart Eco Solutions to bring an environmentally sustainable waste management system.
The project was kicked off last week at a media conference held at the SLIC auditorium with the participation of SLIC Chairman Jagath Wellawatta, SLIC CEO Chandana L. Aluthgama, Director of ICC Nishan Weerasooriya , Director of ICC Nihal De Saram and senior corporate management of SLIC.
As a sustainable solution for the food waste management, a Quick Composter Machine has been installed at the SLIC head office premises to reduce its organic waste and convert garbage into healthy compost within 24 hours. The machine will convert the organic waste to compost, reducing garbage volume by 80 per cent without any smell, gas or smoke, the insurer said in a media release.
Due to the increasingly congested environment, Sri Lanka generates 7000 MT of solid waste per day and out of that, 63.6 per cent is short term biodegradable and a high proportion of this waste is food waste.
“Food waste in open garbage dumps, produce methane, a greenhouse gas, considered more detrimental to the environment than carbon dioxide. According to the 2016 UNEP report, food waste is responsible for producing 3.3 billion tons of greenhouse gases while 14 per cent of the world’s carbon dioxide emissions are caused by food waste,” SLIC said.
