Laptops for schools project put on hold

View(s):

A proposed programme by the former government to distribute laptops for schools in remote areas has been put on hold due to the non-availability of funds, an Education Ministry official said.

The programme has been put on hold until a full budget is presented in Parliament as the proposal needs more than Rs2 billion, the official explained.

The initial programme was estimated to cost Rs5 billion, but was reduced to Rs2 billion after the former President intervened saying the expenses were too high.

Under the programme, 15,000 laptops were to be purchased and distributed among students.

The Education Ministry has launched a survey to assess the requirements for laptops, but the programme will be put into effect only after a full budget is presented.
