Kandy to end Round 2 on top
Unbeaten league champions, Kandy Sports Club will be playing their last second round encounter when they confront the high riding Police Sports Club at the Nittawela Rugby Stadium today. Kick off is scheduled at 4.15pm.
Kandy, led by Nigel Ratwatte, had been playing cohesive rugby throughout this season. He was well supported with the return of Tarinda Ratwatte and Kavindu Perera back in to their hometown while Diluksha Dange and Danushka Dyan stood out for the Upcountry lads.
Meanwhile, the Cops played super brand of rugby this season after a lapse of many decades. The Cops returned to the era of Hafeez Marso, Muruga Jayaratne, Norman Silva and Nizam Jamaldeen where they were the league champions for many years in tandem during 80’s and early 90’s. They will heavily depend on their Fijian player, Emosi, Sachith Silva, Chandimal and Vageesha who will need to guide them through. Police record at Nittawela during the last two decades does not look so great as the Upcountry outfit continued to dominate the series between the two teams.
Kandy SC, who has already retained the league for a record sixth year in tandem, will play their last two Super Round encounters at Nittawela. With the outcome of CR&FC is yet to be known their first opponent will be known after the inquiry which will take place on March 10 in Colombo. Kandy SC is coached by rugby legend, Fazil Marija and assisted by forwards coach Viraj Prasanna. Lasantha Wijesuriya operates as Rugby Chairman for many decades with Kapila Silva acting as the Manager of the outfit.
