A competitive exam or interview system for student admissions will be introduced, for all grades except grade one and grade six

The Education Ministry is to introduce a competitive exam or interview system where students could gain admission to all grades, except grade one and grade six. A senior Education Ministry official said the objective was to introduce a mechanism to enable students to gain admission to any class, other than grade one and six, in the absence of criteria.

The schools will be able to conduct an interview and admit students, but if there are too many applications they could hold a competitive exam.

Currently for grade one admissions all government schools follow a circular which is issued every year, while grade six students are admitted based on the grade five scholarship examination results.

However, for other grades there is no proper system and the principals of these schools follow a different systems regarding admissions.

The ministry official said, under the new system to be introduced next year an interview board will be appointed for each school, comprising the relevant school principal or vice principal, a past pupil organisation representative, as well as teachers and parents.
