Daiyan Shaber a national level Rugby player represented Sri Lanka at the Junior Common Wealth Games and Junior Asian Championships and became the Vice-Captain for Sri Lanka under 19 Rugby team. His love for rugby started at age 4 when he started playing the game and climbed the ranks to become the School Captain for first 15 Rugby under 20 in 2018 for Wesley college. When asked to describe himself Daiyan says ‘I wasn’t the brightest kid in school but I was very outgoing and was able to build good relationships with my teachers, peers and even old boys of Wesley, so having that social influence helped me throughout my school life”. Daiyan was also the Vice President of several student clubs and the Deputy Senior Prefect in school and currently plays for Havelock Sports Club.
Daiyan joined ANC Branch Campus Colombo to pursue his SQA Advanced Diploma program in Business, when asked why he chose ANC he had this to say “ANC offers a very convenient and affordable Advanced Diploma program that allows me to work full-time at FedEx Express, play rugby for Havelock Sports club, which is my passion and study part-time. ANC has been extremely flexible to accommodate my requirement to play during Rugby season, which meant I have to take an extra semester to cover the subjects, yet ANC provided that flexibility.
I really enjoy the SQA modules which are very practical and I can apply it in my own work environment. The lecturers make the subjects very interesting to learn. Chathurya, a straight A student achieving District Rank 49 and island rank 159 and a Z score of 2.14 has one of the highest ranks in the country for Advanced level in Commerce stream. However according to her, studies was a secondary priority as she was involved in every extracurricular activity in school; cricket, volleyball, badminton and more. Her passion for drama and literature earned her Best Junior Drama Actress (English) in 2012 and Best Senior Drama actress in 2016 from the entire school at Gothami Balika Vidyalaya. She says that one of her most proud moments was being the Chief organizer for the Schools Literacy day where she did a remarkable job, and the entire school praised her efforts and inspired students to reach greater standards. Chathurya joined Vishaka Vidyala for her A/levels which she excelled with flying colors.
When asked why she joined ANC Branch Campus Colombo she had this to say ‘I am making the best use of my time with the SQA Advanced Diploma Program; I am working for AIA as a Wealth Planner full-time and I am financing the Advanced Diploma in Business with my own salary from my job. Which means it is affordable for me to study this program, pay for it and conveniently attend lectures part-time which offers the opportunity to pursue my career as well”. Thisuni was inspired by her mother who is a Web Developer and from a very young age she was interested in computers. Her interest in computers grew further during her school days where she pursued her A/levels in Computer Science, Maths and Physics. Thisuni considers herself an average student, who enjoyed playing Badminton, Netball and singing in the school choir. When it came to deciding on her higher education path ANC Branch Campus Colombo was at the top of her list “ANC came highly recommended by my career guidance coach after A/levels, to start the SQA Advanced Diploma program in Computer Science which is the best in Sri Lanka as it offers a practical hands-on education approach’.
Thisuni is currently in her 4th semester at ANC Branch Campus Colombo and had this to say “the lectures are excellent, I have gained so much knowledge and new ideas from doing the practical’s; I have developed websites, developed applications, done a lot of programming and have even created a game”. My friends at other institutes have not had the same opportunities to do practical’s. Thusuni is planning to complete her SQA Advanced Diploma and start her Top-up degree in Computer Science at ANC Branch Campus Colombo in July 2020.
