All quiet on the western front
The spread of the coronavirus and the declaration of the lockdown have had a serious impact on ongoing construction projects.
The Western Province, which has been identified as a high risk zone, has undergone nearly two months of continuous lockdown in an attempt to combat the spread of the virus.
The halt to construction has disrupted many livelihoods, while fresh concerns are being raised whether these building sites could be potential Dengue vector breeding grounds.
Meanwhile, some of the local workers are still stranded in Colombo city, though the government started sending them in batches to their villages recently.
Over 50,000 people have registered to get back to their villages, but only about 300 of them were sent home yesterday.
Contractors pointed out that construction sites are expected to face labour shortages when work recommences due to the reluctance of some workers to return.
