Deadline to hold AGMs or Elections extended
View(s):The Ministry of Sports has decided to extend the deadline of holding Annual General Meetings (AGM) and Elections of sports governing bodies by two months, according to sources.
The ministry made this decision due to the lockdown situation created by the COVID-19 pandemic, which has caused a major setback in the world of sports locally and globally.
With the extension of the deadline, sports governing bodies will be given the liberty to hold their respective AGMs or Elections on or before July 30.
Earlier the Ministry of Sports had instructed its affiliated sports associations and federations to hold the AGMs or Elections by May 31, but following the updated guidelines issued weekly by the health authorities, it was extended further.
“The present situation does not allow sports bodies to act accordingly, and it’s a clear fact. The Ministry of Sports understands the situation and we have given them (sports bodies) ample time,” a ministry source stated.
A few sports governing bodies, including the Sri Lanka Table Tennis Association, have conducted its elections, while two out of the 70 affiliations are being currently governed by Interim Committees. The two sports are bodybuilding and powerlifting.
Elections or AGMs of over 50 sports bodies are pending, according to calculations.
