The Education Ministry has requested the Election Commission to grant permission to recruit 15,000 graduates to the education sector.

The request was made following a decision taken by the Election Commission, where no recruitments or training programmes will be conducted until the elections are held.

Early this year appointment letters were issued to 42,919 graduates to provide jobs under the Government programme to help unemployed graduates secure jobs in the government sector. Another 7,000 graduates will receive their appointment letters following the Parliamentary Elections in August. One of the aims of this programme is to fill vacancies in the education sector.

According to the Ministry, despite having around 240,000 teachers in the education sector, around 50,000 teachers go on leave on a daily basis and about 16,000 teachers go on leave to attend training programmes, and they are working outside teaching hours.

For various other reasons, about 66,000 teachers are not actively contributing towards educational activities.

The Ministry had requested the Election Commission to allow training and appointments for the 15,000 graduates, to introduce them to the education sector.
