Campaigns navigate tough rules
Candidates in the August parliamentary elections are navigating the restrictions imposed on campaigns.
In Puttalam district, where more than 350 are contesting eight seats with 143 of them from recognised political parties, candidates are feeling hemmed in and are asking the Election Commission to review guidelines.
Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) candidate, Sanath Nishantha Perera, likens the restrictions to that of a funeral during the coronavirus pandemic.
Priyankara Jayaratna, who is also contesting from the SLPP said promoting the preference number had been tough.
UNP candidate Palitha Ranga Bandara, said that some candidates used to canvassing for votes by distributing goods, were facing the restrictions.
“It is true that it is difficult to campaign, but the Election Commission is strictly enforcing the laws and the candidates will have to abide by them,’’ he said.
Former deputy minister and one time mayor of Puttalam K.A. Baiz, who is contesting as an independent, said he would usually hold a rally that draws about 10,000, but not this time.
Meanwhile, some small-scale gatherings in the district have not complied with health guidelines.
The police have been tearing up illegal election posters and cutouts.
