Hulangamuwa honoured
View(s):Eric Hulangamuwa, a leading sports personality in the Matale District, was awarded the ‘Vishwa Prasadini’, a lifetime achievement award by the Matale Sports Association for his contributions for sports as a sportsman and an administrator in the district.
An old boy St. Thomas’ College, Matale, Hulangamuwa excelled both in hockey and athletics as a schoolboy. He captained the college Under-13, 15, 17 and the 1st XI hockey teams and Matale District Schools hockey teams. He was awarded school colours for hockey and athletics in 1979/80. In 1973 Hulangamuwa was adjudged the Best Athlete in the Central Province when he won the first place in the 100m event at the All-Island Track and Field Meet in the Under-15 age category.
He excelled in hockey and with his fine stick work he had a major share in many Thomian victories, which was recognised as one of the best school teams in the island. He was a member of the Sri Lanka Youth Hockey team and represented the country in many international competitions.
Hulangamuwa played a leading role in the Matale district in the promotion of the game as an administrator. He held the position as Secretary of the Coach’s Committee of the Sri Lanka Hockey Federation. In 1972 he was elected the President of the Matale Old Thomians Sports Club and held many positions in the Matale District Hockey Association as well as in the Matale District Sports Foundation.
