The Ceylon Teachers Union (CTU) said the Government’s allocation of Rs. 191 million to prepare schools to reopen next month is inadequate, and the schools will be compelled to compromise on the COVID-19 Task Force health restrictions.

It was learned that 10,074 schools in the country would get a sum of Rs. 15,000 to Rs. 100, 000 depending on the size of the student population.

The schools were required to set up taps and sinks with a foot pedal, purchase thermometers and sanitisers with the allocated fund.

CTU General Secretary Joseph Stalin said the Education Ministry is also deducting Rs. 11,750 from the amount allocated for schools to provide thermometers.

“This is wrong and the Education Ministry’s action will only scale down the precautions that need to be taken to stop the spreading of the virus,” Mr Stalin said. (CC)
