Her sweet dreams just got real
‘A little piece of heaven’, ‘Kiss me sweet’ and ‘Sweet dreams are made of cheese’ — what do all these phrases have in common? They aren’t saccharine lines you’ll find in the latest romance novel but descriptions of a few of the decadent desserts you’ll find at Sugar High.
Sugar High is the latest enterprise satisfying sweet cravings and run by 25-year-old Tashiana Yu who just started taking orders a few weeks back.
A dream that had actually been taking form for the past six months but halted because of COVID-19 finally went public when Tashiana began receiving orders. Mostly from supportive family and friends during the first week but through word-of-mouth and social media, things began to pick up.
Having followed in the footsteps of her mother, Tashiana was always taken with how things were made in the kitchen. That coupled with what she calls a “major sweet tooth” and she began to love baking and making desserts for her loved ones.
“My experience with baking honestly is something I do for stress relief. My mom used to tell me that when I am in a good mood and I like doing something, I hum. Everytime I bake I hum so it’s something that I really love doing,” Tashiana says adding that when she bakes she feels disconnected from the outside world and content.
From gooey chocolate brownies, chocolate and strawberry pavlovas, cheesecakes, apple pies and chocolate biscuit pudding with a twist to more delicious treats, Tashiana says that most of the sweets are heirloom recipes passed down from generation to generation. From mother to daughter.
“I actually put things on the list that my friends and family have tasted and they also love and what I love making and eating,” she tells us on the process of creating her menu.
Hoping to put out a new menu soon with some of her personal favourites such as a chocolate and caramel tart, Tashiana is also experimenting with vegan desserts.
“It was a market that I actually didn’t think would be so prominent but a lot of people have been asking me, so I have been experimenting with guilt-free desserts because I know getting fit and living a healthy life is really important…”
Currently Tashiana’s corporate job involves human resources and she also tells us that she has an LLB which she got when she initially wanted to get into law. “My family has been very supportive even when I switched from law to HR to now baking. Of course my father did tell me from the beginning that I should start something with baking,” Tashiana laughs.
She hopes that Sugar High will grow to be something that she can dedicate her full energies to as it is something she loves doing. Although she just started there are already plans of opening a quaint dessert shop in the future.
“I hope this works out well for me because I would like to be my own boss as well. It is something I have been wanting to do from the beginning.”
