BTF winds up in shame
View(s):The British Tamil Forum (BTF) has been wound up under the UK’s Insolvency Act.
This came after one of its Tamil employees petitioned court alleging sexual discrimination and the court ordered that the complainant should be paid compensation out of the assets of the BTF.
A British High Court has held that the BTF was guilty of sexual discrimination against its employee, Roshini Sivagurunathan, who was awarded British Pounds 70,000 (Rs. 16.6 million) as damages.
The BTF, founded in 2006, was touted as the largest Tamil organisation in the UK, fighting for “discrimination of Tamils in Sri Lanka.”
The HC judgment came following a petition filed by Ms. Sivagurunathan. The judge held that the BTF also have been involved in direct discrimination, victimisation and denial of natural justice against the claimant.
The judgment came as a big blow to the BTF since it was unable to pay the damages. Hence, it moved to a court in Manchester under the Insolvency Act of 1986 for insolvency. It has been allowed.
The High Court also held that there was “unscrupulous conduct” on the part of the BTF.
