The education reform committee set up by the Government to bring in reforms for the country’s education sector has proposed to transform the 19 National Colleges of Education to degree granting institutions.

Under the programme which is ear marked for 2022, all Education Colleges will directly admit students for degree programmes from students who pass the Advanced Level (A/L) exams.

Until now, the Education Colleges were playing second fiddle to the University Grants Commission (UGC), by taking in students who could not be admitted to the state universities.

In 2022, direct applications will be called from interested candidates for the National College of Education degree programme, Reforms Committee Chairperson Dr. Upali Seder said.

The criteria that has to be met for admissions to be carried out had not been determined yet, he said.

Also, plans were being made to bring in the eight Teacher Training Colleges under the umbrella of the National College of Education. This would increase the number of degree awarding colleges in Sri Lanka to 27.
