More online and distance learning openings for Lankan students, lecturers and other professionals

Those who lost their employment or income opportunities due to COVID-19 and those who wish to gain new skills, are encouraged to apply for free online courses offered by the National Library and Documentation Services Board, in partnership with the Commonwealth of Learning, Canada.
Five thousand Sri Lankans will be eligible to enroll for free online courses. Those selected will have access to over 3800 certificate courses varying from digital marketing, web designing, project management, entrepreneurship, business English, business analysis, Java programming, cyber security, Android app developer, Java programmer courses from recognised universities.
These courses could be accessed through a smartphone, desktop or laptop. Once these courses were completed a globally recognised certificate would be issued.
Students currently pursuing their undergraduate, diploma or postgraduate degree were also encouraged to apply. The National Library had also obtained the assistance of the National Vocational Training Authority to get students as well as lecturers to follow courses available online.
This offer comes under Skills Online Sri Lanka, a programme implemented in Sri Lanka by the National Library to support youth and adults to participate and complete skills and professional development courses offered by the online learning platform Coursera.
Coursera was founded in 2012 by Stanford University computer science professors, to share their experiences of Stanford courses online. Princeton, Stanford, the University of Michigan and the University of Pennsylvania were the first universities to offer content on the platform. The offers had expanded to include specialisations.
Hosted by the Government of Canada and headquartered in Burnaby, Canada, the Commonwealth of Learning (COL) was the world’s only inter-governmental organisation mainly focused on the promotion and development of distance education and open learning.
