Dr Rohantha to Chair Rotary’s 12,000 Youth- Interact & Rotaract
View(s):Rotary the only service organisation that has a nonvoting seat in the United Nations that has around 6200 Interactors and 5800 Rotaractors in the District 3220( Sri Lanka & Maldives) has appointed Dr Rohantha Athukorala as the Chairman – Youth Services Committee for the year 2020/21 by the Rotary District Governor Ajith Weerasinghe.
Dr Athukorala addressing Law Faculty, University of Colombo – Rotaract Installation last week.
A top professional who has served the multinational ReckittBenckiser, DiverseyLever and went on to serve the United Nations( UNOPS) has also worked for the Government of Sri Lanka as the Chairman Sri Lanka Export Development Board, Sri Lanka Tourism and Lanka Sathosa. He has twice won the converted ‘ Outstanding Rotarian award’ twice in his tenure and the ‘ Abdul Kalam outstanding leadership award.
Dr Athukorala addressing the elite Law Faculty-University of Colombo, Rotaract Club Installation last week, opinionioned that Sri Lanka must now pick the best ideas and make it a reality in the economy irrespective of the source of the idea. The logic being that the the world around us is falling apart with India recording a -23.9% de growth and Maldives at -11%. This means that unless Sri Lanka ruthlessly Drive a business agenda engaging the youth of the country, we can also sink like what has happened to the other counterparts in the South Asian region said Athukorala.
India released an official communique that its economy has contracted -23.9% which means millions of people have lost their sources of income. Latest reseach reveal that almost one fifth of the 1.2 billion Indian population has been exposed to Covid and sixty thousand have succumb to it. Chennai is worst hit are the early reports coming out. This gives an idea to us on how the pandemic can impact the global supply chain and there will be having ramifications to Sri Lanka too.
We see a similar situation emerging with Australian economy contracting by -7% and Brazil at -9.7% GDP growth and early reports say that the UK economy has spiraled by -20%. I guess the real numbers will emerge but I would encourage the Interactors & Rotaractors to launch serve projects that can be linked to the macro economy of Sri Lanka.
