The stage is finally set to inaugurate the Lankan Premier League (LPL), the newest addition to the mushrooming domestic leagues in the world starting November 14, a few days after the conclusion of the world’s biggest cricketing extravaganza, the IPL (Indian Premier League). The tournament will run from November 14 to December 6.

Although the agreement is yet to be signed between Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), the owner of the franchise based T20 league, and Innovative Production Group (IPG), the Event Rights Holder of the five-team tournament, the latter announced the first team of the league Galle Gladiators owned by the owner of Pakistan Super League franchise Quetta Gladiators in Pakistan this week.

The five franchises will be selected by the rights holder but they have been asked to follow due diligence exercise on their capabilities, financial strength, business plans, commitment to promote Sri Lanka cricket. They are expected to enter into a five-year agreement.

The other four teams are yet to be finalised but SLC has given a September 7 deadline to the Event Rights Holder to share the details of the prospective owners. Sources said nine parties have shown interest in owning the franchise rights.

Indian media yesterday reported, the league owners have approached franchise owners of the IPL to come on board – a major boost if it manages to convince.

The SLC says the tournament has attracted a huge interest from the players with over 350 cricketers across the globe having shown interest in joining the league.

“There were over 350 cricketers who had shown interest in playing in the league including some from associate countries like USA and Canada. We are in the process of finalising a list of about 190 international players to go to the player auction along with another 130 Sri Lankan cricketers,” said SLC CEO Ashley de Silva.

A total of 30 international cricketers and 65 local cricketers are expected to make up the five teams. The matches will be played in Colombo, Dambulla, Pallekele and Hambantota.
