COVID-19

This virus was not there in the past,
it came in 2020. Many people have caught this virus. Doctors have been making medicines to kill it. This virus started in China and it spread to Italy, Spain and even Sri Lanka! Doctors are the people who have named it COVID-19.

Lots of people have been making
hand-sanitizers and soaps which kill
90% of germs. Even on TV they show
about COVID-19 and how to prevent it.
People have died because of COVID-19.

So how can we kill it? Well wash your hands thoroughly. Do not touch your eyes, nose and mouth. Don’t touch lifts or buttons on the lifts and don’t shake hands.
If you do touch a lift, then put hand sanitizer or wash your hands for
20 seconds or more. Wear a mask if you are going somewhere and quickly have a bath when you come home.

How I spent my last vacation

For the first time, we spent a long time at home. This is not the usual vacation period that we enjoy. We couldn’t go outside, we couldn’t meet friends and we had to stay at home. The cause for this was the COVID-19 virus.

During this vacation I did many useful things. We had a plantation programme called ‘Let’s Go Green JMCians’ held by our school. In this programme we had to make a video of planting any type of seed and upload it to the JMC Facebook account. I planted tomato, chili, brinjal, kankun, capsicum and aloe vera. Now all the plants have grown and I feel happy seeing them.

Other than planting, I painted, drew pictures, read books, played my organ and I didn’t forget to do my studies as well.

During this period we had a ‘Digital Avurudu’ organized by the JMC management. I participated in many games held. I enjoyed it very much. There was a Vesak programme too.
I made a Vesak lantern and a Vesak card for that.

Online classes were also held by our school during this vacation. We did online classes through Zoom and
MS Teams.

I spent my vacation doing many useful things.
I wish that the world will be free from COVID-19 virus and also that there will be happiness again.

A house  for a mouse

I need a house

Said the little mouse

In that wall

In the hall

In some style

I’ll take a while

To make my home

With some foam

And some straw

I’ll need some foil

And some coil

It will be neat

Once it is complete

I’ll have a happy life

With children and a wife.

Worshiping Kiriwehera in Kataragama

My grandfather and grandmother used to worship Kiriwehera once a year with us.

After the delay due to the COVID-19
pandemic, we managed to do this in the
last week of August.

The famous Menik River flows down searching for the ocean, in front of
Kataragama Devalaya. As the
Monaragala district is experiencing a drought, there was very little water in the river and we couldn’t have the joy of
swimming this time. The river was hardly flowing, filled with dirty water and sand dunes. We crossed the Menik River through a narrow bridge.

Katharagama area was experiencing dry season too, without a drop of rain for the past few months. People believe that ‘Katharagama Deviyo’ is one of the guardian deities of Buddhism. The Bo tree behind the Devalaya called the Astapala Bodhiya, is a branch of the sacred Sri Maha Bodhiya in Anuradapura.

Kiriwehara is big stupa built by
King Mahasena in the 3rd century BC.
It is among the ‘Solosmasthana,’ the sixteen most sacred Buddhist pilgrimage sites in Sri Lanka. Our grandparents had brought ‘Dolos-pirikara’, ‘Atapirikara’ and 108 herbals to offer to Kiriwehera.

‘Dolos-pirikara’ was offered to the
Astapala Bodhiya while the latter was
offered to the Kiriwehera. Due to the bright and clear sky with moonlight,
Kiriwehera was shining white and we had a very pleasant pilgrimage.
