Anouk Chitty wins Agora League Matchplay Championship 2020
The Royal Colombo Golf Club (RCGC) Ladies Section has always created excitement and ‘innovation’ in providing a Golf Calendar that encourages Lady Members to enjoy their golf with a flavour of competition that is enthralling.
Sponsored by Agora Securities the Agora League Matchplay Championship 2020 is a tournament played in two stages.
First the round robin stage where all the players were randomly divided into four groups and each player played against each other in their respective groups. Points are allocated for a result in this stage which is followed by the knock-out stage and the ‘grand finale’ played on September 7.
The knock-out ‘finale’ was the highlight with the four leagues producing the Championship League, Premier League, Legends League and Warriors League Winners in Stage two. The Championship League was won by Anouk Chitty beating Jin Park 3/1, the Premier League was won by Manori Jayakoddy beating Ruvani Desinghe 2/1, the Legends League was won by Ahalya Rajan beating Danny Hameed 3/1 and the Warriors League was won by Niranjali Amarasuriya beating Shyama Perera 4/3. The novel format produced nail-biting finishes in the tense Matchplay Tournament at RCGC. The spectacular golf was followed by a colourful programme adorned with a ‘knowledge enhancing’ session on the rules of golf presented by professional golfer Anura Rohana and ‘etiquette’ graciously imparted by legendary lady golfer, a former Ladies champion golfer and past Captain of the Ladies Section Mrs Yvonne Abhayaratne.
The RCGC Captain Navin de Silva graced the occasion with charm and eloquence. Past Lady Captains and champions of yesteryear were recognised and honoured for their presence.
The Lady Captain Kishani Vethavinayakam warmly welcomed the small but distinguished gathering comprising Past Lady Captains Mrs Yvonne Abhayaratne, Mrs Gunn Peiris and Mrs Oosha Chanmugam. The loving personality Ms Rohini de Mel at 96 years the oldest lady member present, was among many others who participated and contributed to the glamour and grandeur of the event. Special mention was made with appreciation to Mrs Ruvini Desinghe Director AGORA Securities for the generous sponsorship of the unique tournament motivating the Royal Colombo Ladies to be engaged in the competitive AGORA League Match Play Championship 2020.
