The Ceylon Teachers Union (CTU) called on the Government to take necessary health precautions to protect around 700,000 students sitting national exams, from the COVID-19 virus. While the decision to hold the Advanced Level (A/L) exams and grade five scholarship exams on schedule was welcome, the Government should provide students and teachers serving as invigilators all facilities needed to take precautions, CTU Secretary General Joseph Stalin said.

“They should be given masks and sanitisers and they should undergo temperature checks, before entering the examination centres,” Mr. Stalin said.

He also said the teachers should be appropriately paid for taking this risk and helping with the exam procedure.

Meanwhile the Government had also promised students areas where a curfew was imposed, transport to and from examination centres.

“This facility should be given to students living in other areas too,’” Mr. Stalin said.

On Tuesday the Government decided to go ahead with national exams as scheduled.  Accordingly, the grade five scholarship exams would be held today (October 11) and the A/L  exams would begin tomorrow (October 12). -CC
