The country’s primary and secondary education system will experience a huge blow from a severe shortage of around 20,000 teachers within national and provincial schools in the near future, the Ceylon Teacher’s Union (CTU) said recently.

A mass recruitment of about 70,000 teachers which took place between1989-1990 would lead to a large number of teachers retiring in the coming years causing this shortage, CTU President Joseph Stalin told the Education Times.

“This will definitely have a negative impact on rural schools already suffering from a shortage of teachers,” he said.

He also said the Government should speed up the placements process as around 5000 students had received their qualifications from national colleges of education this year.

“The present Government’s graduate scheme will not help to solve the shortage. We need those qualified in the teaching profession,” Mr. Stalin said.

He also said teachers who had received recommendations for transfers from rural schools, saw their transfers delayed due to the absence of replacements.
