Ranjith Weerasena was a gentle giant
It was sad news to me when I heard of the passing away of the gentle giant Ranjith Weerasena who reigned supreme in our athletics for several decades. He had his entire education at St Peter’s College, Bambalapitiya where I too was studying. We participated in athletics. He was a champion discus thrower at national level and also excelled in putt shot. He held the discus national record for several years. Then he headed the National Olympics Committee for a long period of time.
Ranjith was a giant of a man with a pleasing personality.
His brother Dr Lakshman Weerasena was also a popular physician who had his Dispensary in Kollupitiya. He too was an ardent Peterite.
The last time I met Ranjith Weerasena was at the Josephian-Peterite match at the Colombo Oval seated with the Rector of St Peter’s College, Rev. Fr Travis Gabriel in the VIP enclosure at which we reminisced our past. Mano Chanmugam, another big name at St Peter’s College too was present on this occasion.
All Peterites around the world will remember Ranjith as a devoted athlete and a loyal Peterite.
Good bye my friend Ranjith. May the beautul angels sing you to your eternal rest.
