A bit of paradise in every piece of jewellery

Creativity is what’s behind the beauty of life, and more often than not, someone’s creativity never fails to impress and inspire. And the work by Isuru Jayashan the talent behind the Elysian Eunoia brand is exactly that.

Elysian Eunoia was started by Isuru in 2017, when he was in university, simply as a hobby. However, now it’s grown into an online store with a following and unrivalled standards. Isuru, a statistics student, started up his crafting and kept at it even while he was finishing his education, starting his internship, and even dabbling in other venues like photography.

The name Elysian Eunoia was born out of a need to combine “from paradise” and a “well mind.” For Isuru, it means a little bit of paradise goes with each piece he creates. And all the pieces are crafted from scratch by himself.

Theyearning to craft had been in him since his youth, he recalls, telling us how his very first copper pieces were from the copper wires used to hang clothes on. During school he used to help with costume design and theatre as well, he remembered.

Starting on his copper jewellery, he was inspired by online tutorials, he added. When he ran out of copper in his house, his friends brought him some, after which he found a supplier in Kandy from where he gets his materials.

Leaving his first internship at a corporate after some soul searching, Isuru decided to devote his time to improving the Elysian brand. While at first his family was unnerved at him working his own business after graduating, they quickly appreciated his developing talent. Soon, he started attracting attention and began getting requests from other countries, and expanding his business.

His first big local break came when he applied for and started selling his products at the good market, coming every week from his home in Kandy to do so. Isuru sold his art and crafts for over a year at the good market, and built quite the following for it too.

Last year another opportunity came knocking on his door when a fashion designer from Matara, who approached him to supplement her outfits with his jewellery.

By the time COVID19 struck, Isuru had been exporting his pieces to the UK through a dedicated supplier as well as thinking of establishing a foothold on Etsy. He also had dedicated suppliers in France as well.  However, not all his plans were deterred by the pandemic, he explained, with him even going to Arugambay to sell his pieces during the season. The outdoor market sales, however, had to stop, he said.

Two and a half years of continuous work later, Isuru is now fully dedicated to Elysian, and is developing it not just locally, but establishing an international foothold as well. – Pix courtesy Isuru Jayashan
