Academics have discussed climate change risks to Sri Lanka at an online conference in Peradeniya.

Engagement between the scientific community and policymakers is important to bridge the gap between theory and practice, said Dr Anil Jasinghe, the secretary to the Ministry of Environment, who also cited a world index that says Sri Lanka is among the most vulnerable to climate change.

He spoke at the International Conference on Environmental Monitoring and Management at the postgraduate institute of science auditorium at the University of Peradeniya.

The keynote was delivered by Dr Ananda Mallawatantri, country representative of ICNU.

He said development policies aim to create change. Often change involves the environment, or changes to the ecosystem, requiring monitoring and adjusting the plans to suit the new context.

Other speakers were Peradeniya University vice chancellor, Prof Upul B. Dissanaayke, Prof S.P. Dissanayake co-chair of the conference, Prof Tilak Hewawasam, Prof H.M.T.G.A. Pitawela and Prof Shamee Jinadasa.
